MasterChef – Tues, July 4

The winning contestants from the invention test and the Kappo challenge now have a chance to fight it out for immunity in view of Mount Fuji at the Obuchi Tea Plantation.

Hmm, lemme guess: They have to make a dish using tea? Fire up the smoking guns!

    • Soy milk ice cream… YUCK I’ve yet to taste a decent one. For non dairy, coconut milk ice cream is much better, IMO
      If anyone is interested:
Spring Weather in Japan. In March, Tokyo’s spring weather is an average of 13 degrees during the afternoon, and 5 degrees Celsius during the morning and evening. In April, the afternoon temperatures reach an average of 18.5 degrees, while temperatures in the morning and night are around 10.5 degrees Celsius.

      • Yep, coconut milk or even almond milk is much nicer in ice creams. I can drink soy coffee but only eat it in ice cream under sufferance

      • Did she just use soy milk or did she also add cream? I thought I heard her say there was cream but that doesn’t make sense. If that was the case she should have just made regular ice cream. However, why did she even make ice cream. I am so tired of all the ice cream this season. Ice cream makers (both the machines and the humans) need to be eliminated.

  1. Now I get why Gary said the amatas were creative “early in the competition”…….they’re showing nothing now.

It’s a miracle if and when an amata gets the dreaded ice cream to set.

    • Most “extraordinary” season eva!
Guess they didn’t say if it was extraordinarily good or extraordinarily bad.
I’m over ice cream, big time.

  2. Tamara is pontificating on how hard it is to be on the sidelines.

Can it be a pie(deconstructed or otherwise) without pastry?

  3. Sarah says: “We’ve all had our shining moments”…….if only your teeth could talk.

  4. Bak kut teh – Not a fan of that dish while it’s cooking. Tastes ok though, but really just a one-pot-wonder. What are those dough things you serve with it?

  5. Not learning much about Japanese cuisine. They could have spent the week in Daiso…rather than Japan.

  6. OMG – so VERY pleased to be wrong! Time to watch Love Child now. I was really convinced that they were going to give Karlie a second pin. HAPPY

  7. Are they actually in Japan or is that a green screen behind them? So far, there’s nothing very ‘Japanesey’ about this week. Even last night’s chef looked completely disinterested, and his ‘interpreter’ was reading from pre-prepared notes below.

Karlie always takes the safe option, pretends to worry, but caramelises everything, plates up nicely and gets away with it. Apple pie, really?
The mad monk always cooks Asian, constantly channeling her mum and utilises hyperbole and bizarre behaviour, to her advantage.

I forgave Ben’s ice cream yesterday, but if he does it again, I shall have to review my infatuation.
And what’s with George? He looked like a Scottish Jihadist with that tartan blanket draped around his neck.

  8. The judges are really annoying me this week, much more so than usual. They should save their comments and critiques until they are tasting the dishes. Round one, uhhnn Ben, have a plan B; Karlie, your ice cream is too icy; Sarah (before tasting), we’re concerned your fruit taste is too dominant. Come on! Shut the hell up, let them sink or swim at this stage of the competition. Good for all of them for sticking with their planned dish, especially Sarah for telling them she thought hers was balanced and she was happy with the flavours. And the results? Karlie’s too-icy ice cream beats Ben’s too-hard ice cream. Nope. I’m too pissed off to watch the rest.

    • Sarah should have just been given the pin without going to another round just because she didn’t make ice cream.

  9. Ahhhh, more fucking ice cream. It’s freezing over there, how could anyone want to eat ice cream? Brrrrr
Don’t think I’d like poached chicken. It looks a bit bland to me. I like my chicken fried. But the judges raved about it.

  10. Decided I couldn’t put myself through Masterchef tonight. Doesn’t look like I’ve missed much.
Sorry to hear that Ben is on thin ice (cream). I thought he was better than that.

  11. Would have liked to have known what kinds of teas they had to choose from. Stooges have tea samples on a plate and don’t even identify what they are.
Fast forwarded through this episode. Was excited that they were going to Japan but it’s been very boring.
I expect we will see many more ice creams before the end of this season.

    • Many, many, many more ice creams. Sadly. With crispy pork too no doubt.
I thought Japan week would be great and I was ready to watch again. But disappointed by day two…it’s a paint by numbers series.

  12. In honor of this best eva season of MC, today I’m going to have French toast ice cream for breakfast, an ice cream salad for lunch (kale, silverbeet, carrots and whatever else I can throw in there using a soy milk base) and pizza ice cream for dinner.

    • I know, I can’t eat ice cream in cold weather & I live in Qld where it’s not that cold.

    • The problem with that idea is that they can’t actually cook LP. So anything you can’t put in churner is out.

Remember these are the best ever amatas who needed to be shown how to make self-saucing pudding – which was nearly the first recipe I taught my son when he was 5 year old as it is practically foolproof!

      • I couldn’t believe some of them didn’t appear to have ever seen a self saucing pudding. It was a staple of my life growing up. Mum made them all the time in winter.

    • The challenges are not long enough for most puddings. Puddings are lots of work to start, then lots of time in the oven/steamer while the cook goes off and watches Tv or reads or folds the washing.
And usually, a pudding does not have five elements to plate up, to make the plate look pretty. They are just a really, really yummy blob in a bowl.

  13. Look how busy this comment thread gets when there is nothing much on the box! I watched up to the point where Ben lost for his Mt Fuji (WTF was he thinking). I’m glad Sarah is doing so well. I like having someone on TV who is not a perky ponytail type and you can’t doubt her drive and enthusiasm

  14. I’m bored by this years Masterchef. Haven’t watched any episodes for over a week.
Poldark was great on Sunday and started watching Unforgotten, a crime drama series on ABC . Excellent. Plus the odd episode of Father Brown.

  15. They should set some theme for them to cook. Since they are in Japan, what about a ramen challenge or a bento box challenge?
Please showcase Japanese cuisines, not some silly fusion food.

    • They would have to use common sense. hmmmm

I think tonight is a street food challenge, so hopefully we’ll see actual food rather than ice cream.

  16. So more ice cream and Sarah cooking pork again. This is getting boring. Looks like any one has a chance to take this out, can’t see a clear favourite amongst them.

  17. I dont fancy anyone in particular for a win. Don’t like Sarah or Ben and karlie im not sure about although she can cook.. trying to visualise one of them on the front of a cookbook but can’t – although there isn’t going to be a book!

  18. I’ve been a fan of Ben and Sarah for about a month now. Ben’s looks will get him a TV gig, no problem. He can cook, too! I think Sarah is super enthusiastic but most importantly seems to have a decent palate.
    Sarah works at PWC

    The others:

Diana – Definitely my next favourite. Seems a bit stern (nervous?) or just very serious. Couldn’t believe it when she stuffed up her Heston time.
Tamara, (with the rest of Australia) I find annoying. I still think she’s the “canary in the coal mine” of 2017
Eloise – I think she is getting better (still annoying but at least she doesn’t mention her whiskey bar in every episode anymore) but would be stunned if she won.
Arum – Just can’t warm to him. He’s seems so insecure about his cooking and always gives the impression that he’s out of his depth.
Callan – Too immature and can’t think on his feet. In love with molecular gastronomy without understanding the basics.
Karlie and Eliza – Interchangeable? i don’t mind either of them. Eliza has that annoying Princess Diana (mona lisa?) smile
