MasterChef Tues: Darren Purchese

Contestants have three hours to complete a simply stunning Darren Purchese dish, but in the final hour of the cook, a twist that no one could anticipate is thrown at the contestants.

  1. Amina decides to not follow the recipe order. She starts with the pav shell instead of the secret dessert to sit inside it. Whyyyyy?!! .

  2. The twist is that their recipes are removed for the last part of the cook. So if they have not read ahead they are screwed.

    • I thought the twist was especially cruel. It worked out OK because the 2020 contestants are experienced with some being professionals. However, I think there would have been major meltdowns with true amateurs.

  3. Jess is so sweet to help out Amina. Even Reynold get flutter and Callum has to give him encouragement.

Some former contestant said you have to memorize the ratio for common recipes. There is a cookbook with all the ratio for baking. The one I like is 3:2:1. 3 parts flour to 2 parts butter to 1 part water for a pie crust.

    • Both my mother and grandmother used to make a cake called, surprisingly, the 1:2:3:4 cake.
      Butter, sugar, flour, eggs.
      Worked every time.

      • My gran made a peach cobbler that featured just 1:1:1:1:1:1

100g butter, 1 cup flour, 1 tsp baking powder, 1 cup sugar, 1 cup milk, 1 large can peaches (drained). She’d put the butter in a baking dish in the oven at 175C until melted. Then while that was happening, she’d mix the flour, baking powder, sugar and milk together, then add it to the melted butter in the pan, Put the peaches over the top and bake for 50 minutes. We’d have it in winter smothered in custard. Yum!

That was an easy dessert to remember – I never need the recipe (though I’ve sometimes added ½tsp cinnamon and used a small can of peaches and thrown in a cup of raspberries as well). I’m sure gran doesn’t mind 🙂

  4. I wasn’t watching much before the tastings. But every time I checked in, it was Poh and her usual schtick, oh I won’t finish, I can’t do this…only this time she was correct. I’ll have a nasty moment and say ha ha, Poh, serves you right, you don’t learn from past panic moments.

Laura is up herself and I’ll be happy to see the back of her.

Taking the recipe away is a mean twist. Presumably they all read through the recipe, but for a complicated dish, you check back on the recipe many times. Reynold could wing it, but others must have struggled.

I was sad that Amina was eliminated. She’s not the best cook, but she’s pretty good. Going off recipe was silly, so fair call.

I don’t like these twists. They seem more contrived to cause stress than simulate a disaster anyone would hit in a commercial establishment. What’s next, the lights go out? The gas runs out?

    • “Laura is up herself and I’ll be happy to see the back of her.” LOL, I agree 100%.
Also agree about Poh. I liked her a bit back in day and used to catch her show at times. This paid acting gig has done it for me though. It’s as if a ‘walk-in’ has taken over her. Ick.

  5. I loved the death stare that Tracy threw Jock when he took the recipe away.

What a daft “twist” – it’s such a technical recipe that it’s not just a simple “seeing how well they cope with a change” but is rather cruel and only designed for reality tv drama. *yawn* Jock going on about how we use ingredients, not recipes and they should just cook was patent nonsense. I’d like to see him replicate that dessert under the same circumstances. Prat.

Poh was boring and contrived as usual and given far too much airtime. I laughed at Tess channelling George with her “Look at me, Poh! You can do this” spiel. I thought we had heard the last of crap like that.

Jess really impressed me, both with her grasp of the recipe, but also her generous offer to help out Amina. And we briefly saw a chink in Reynold’s composure, though he came good in the end, without the pep talk from the peanut gallery.

Poor Amina – her dessert really looked bad. And she had no chance of staying as the other two in the bottom three (Poh and Hayden) each need to earn their $40,000 for the producers.

    • Yes, when Jack said that, to Darren Purchase. I said out loud at the time ‘you don’t say that to a pastry chef you f*ing dick’. He is a prat.

  6. Was surprised that Reynold got so stressed and lost his composure. I think that he strives for perfection and without the recipe he feared that his dessert would not be perfect. Of all the contestants, though, I would have thought that he would have remained the calmest when the recipes were taken away. He even needed Hayden to tell him not to fill the molds all the way to the top.

  7. I thought that was a mean-spirited challenge and not just because the lovely Amina went home. A highly technical desert that they were meant to replicate without a recipe? Why? It seemed pointless.
Not sure why Amina thought cooking out of timetable order was a good thing though. . .
Came around to Jess big time last night for helping Amina so kindly.
    Reynold was awesome.

      • That’s hilarious, Juz.

I suspect Hayden was hired to provide a bit of ocker, blokey comedy relief. He’s failing miserably and ought to have gone home ages ago. But I guess the producers want their $40,000 worth.

Mean-spirited is a perfect description, Brusselsprout. It’s sad to see a show that had focused on food challenges and watching people grow as cooks suddenly resort to gimmicky challenges that are more at home on a Gordon Ramsay show. Last night was not an enjoyable watch at all.
