Sunday night it’s the upstairs reveal on The Block and the next task is finishing off the interiors.

Thanks to Maz for her score updates and recaps this season.

  1. House 1
The study with its vista of the oak tree and the northern light streaming through the window is really taking advantage of its surroundings. The judges refer to the post Covid world where a study is a necessity but admit this one is beautiful and you would not get much work done.

For Darren it is a masterful stroke to have an oak floor, with an oak table top looking out to the oak.

On the downside, the painting is terrible.

We move to the bedroom where Shaynna exclaims, Oh my goodness. It is stunning. The judges are intrigued by the angles. The joinery is declared to be very impressive, the colour pallette autumnal and it is a pivate useful adult space.

Again, the painting is condemned as terrible.

    • This upstairs was really poky. The floor plans didn’t seem so, but there was only two bedrooms (one with the ceiling) bathroom and passageway desk.

  2. House 2

Like House 1, we start with the study and immediately, Shaynna observes that this one is really spacious (compared to the one downstairs). Again, there is the obligatory comments that Work from Home is so on trend at the moment. We learn that two chairs side by side shows great business acumen to run a small business.

On to the WC…Neale love the black sink. Hate the lack of contrast.

Then finally the children’s bedroom…the judges sound surprise that a couple sans children can create a space for future taxpayers. The space has a sense of whimsy, emotion and romance replete with cossseted tea pot. The grafico have a wonderful timeless quality to it. The judges appreciate that the ‘children’ element is not a fixed feature and the space can easily transform into a space for an older child or adult.

    • Pretty much agree with all that. Styling was lovely (for a magazine shoot) but I couldn’t see it being for real kids. Well-deserved win, and the producers were probably stoked that this team again presented a win-worthy zone so they could play out the fairytale.

  4. House 3
The judges pretend to admire the view of the other houses and then
rhapsodize about the study cum rumpus room. Shaynna cuts straight to the chase and states the styling is unsophisticated,

The additional bedroom is real estate gold but it is nothing to get excited about.

Then onto the ‘secret’ storage space. Meh. The judges go through the motions.

  5. House 4

    Paintwork bad.

Kingsman good (despite desk drawer dragging on the carpet).

Thinks that just about sums up House 4.

    • I liked this bedroom with the green shiplap wall and the decor. I agree with the judges that the bedhead should have been higher.

Their study space was too white and gold for me. It needed other colour, and the white everything is impractical if this is the kid’s hang out area. Pointless knicknacks hanging on the wall.

  6. House 5

The judges think the lack of office is a mistake on par with the lack of dining table last week. Shaynna makes it clear that they know House 5 is flushed with cash but their spending is quite stingy. They absolutely need to put an office in the studio.

The TV is positioned too high in the media space.

On to the bedroom. Neale hates it. The dried flowers are horrendously funereal in their ugliness. Shaynna laughs and no amount of editing can hide the fact the judges are over it.

    • Show’s you how quickly things changed: from a nice to have study desk to must have work space.
I thought the house five bedroom overwhelming. And I think they are saving their pennies to do the gardens – that is really costly.
And there is a further space to be renovated? How big is this place?

      • This week is Hell Week (hallways, laundry, entrance and redo room). We understand that this will finish the main house.

Then the following weeks will need to be padded out with
        Exterior
        Front Garden
        Back Garden
        Studio/Garage
        Bitching about auction order…

    • The media room was a bit of a nothing room for me. Nice but yes, TV is too high.

Loved the bedroom, the colours were gorgeous. Like Darren said, that is the way to make brown look great (it was a rusty brown, though, not chocolate) Of course, I hated the current fashionable wallpaper, but I have had to accept that they are all going to use this ugliness. I just assess the bedroom ignoring it.

I also don’t like dried flowers, but it is definitely a “nod” to the fifities/sixties!

  7. Wow according to Jasmine a woman objecting to her stuff Being stolen is being feisty – way to support women in the workplace. No opinions about your tradesman being an aggressive arse? how disappointing, I thought we had gotten rid of those throwback women who blamed women for a man’s behaviour.

    • Haven’t liked Jasmine from the start. Or Luke. They’re both crass whingers. And she’s a school teacher!
She never stopped whingeing about the heritage requirements, as if noone else had the same rules.
He’s always takes shortcuts – bathroom not plumbed, squeaky floors he tried not to fix.
Luke’s team stole from Sarah and abused her, and he came out all beady eyes, shoulders hunched up telling Sarah “don’t cry, please don’t, it’s fine” It obviously was not fine. Dickhead.

      • I thought I was the only one who had trouble with these two. They are nice enough on the surface (you’d be friendly acquaintances with them) but the habits you mention have been getting more and more annoying. Jasmin in particular.

That incident with Sarah and the tradie was fraught with women’s lib issues, swinging one way then the other like a pendulum. But Jasmin’s comment that Sarah addressed the tradie too aggressively and therefore his reaction was her fault – not good. She almost implied that the way to deal with men was to use Scarlett O’Hara tactics – bat your eyelids and simper. Is that the way she does things?

Much as Luke’s work habits need some discipline, I do like that he immediately addresses conflicts with action. He seems quite protective of women, and that shows in his interactions with Jasmin, too. And she plays up to it.

  8. Each episode, Harry sinks further in my estimation. At the start, I thought it would be Tash but she seems good once she got through the initial days. Harry has been chosen as Keith’s bad boy, and Keith rides him hard. The more Harry argues and refuses to cooperate the more aggro Keith gets. A vicious cycle.

That said, what on earth is the difference between wrapping your house, and adding some timber in order to wrap your house? I don’t understand why all these houses weren’t wrapped as early as possible to protect the old timber framing. I’m with Harry on this, it is not equal treatment. OTOH, why are Harry’s tradesman wasting time on an unnecessary task, when there is so much to do inside?

    • Anybody notice that in the next ep, that section of H & T’s house was wrapped?
The fairies must have come in overnight.

  9. The whole section with the painting of the portraits was up there with some of the most boring tv I have watched this year. Pointless waste of time.

But the other half of the show, with the extra teams, was quite interesting. These people are all strangers to me, so I have no baggage for what they were like as contestants. I do think it is a good way to help the teams achieve the workload this week, without making it look like too much assistance from the producers.

I had been thinking that Harry and Tash were getting a bit of the “lazy” edit, probably exaggerated. But when you have two new helpers come in who know what is required, and they also see problems, maybe that is what Harry and Tash are like. One of the men said that they are procrastinators, which I thought astute, pointing out that you could have the job half done by the time that you have complained about it four times.

  10. Just have to point out – as far as contestants go, George and Sarah are gold. So many start out well, but become irritating or arrogant. but these two…

    George is hilarious…
Sarah is sweet, and a great “straight-man”…
And together, they are such a great example of how a marriage can be.

The farmers are still my favs to win, but it is hard to find nicer people than G&S.

    • I agree Fijane – George and Sarah are a nice couple and funny too. I love a woman who is a great straight man!
